Introduced in 1892 in Detroit this classic red beet became an American favorite eventually adopting the name Detroit since it was the best beet from that city. Known for its vibrant color and sweet flavor it's a smooth uniform 2·3" round dark red beet with no rings or streaks and is very tender. An added benefit is the 13-16" deep green tops that can be used in salads or cooked like Swiss Chard. Harvest anytime after the root reaches 1 ". Twist off the leaves instead of cutting to prevent "bleeding" which can cause beet to lose color and maybe even flavor. Plant in loose, rich, well-drained soil so the root can grow without stress.
