Melothria scabra
This small cucumber-like fruit is also known as Mexican Sour Gherkin, Mouse Melon, Uttle Watermelon or Cucamelon. It is native to Mexico and Central America where it has been enjoyed for centuries. At only about an inch long, it looks like a tiny watermelon, oval and smooth skinned with stripes like a watermelon. The taste has a hint of citrus with sweet cucumber flavor. Support the long vigorous vines with cages, trellis or along a fence for best results. It can be pickled, added to salads or eaten fresh. The tiny fruits fall off the vines when ripe, as the fruit matures the stripes fade and the flesh becomes a little sour.
