Carolina Gold Hybrid is an heirloom variety that can be traced back to the early 1800's. It was grown by farmers throughout the Carolinas well before industrial agriculture was established. Tuey found it was easy to grow in their climate, and had good disease resistance, but more importantly it had great flavor. At the turn of the 1900's it was no longer being grown commercially. It was later rediscovered and bred by the University of South Carolina to give the variety more disease resistance. The medium sized golden-yellow fruits have a rich, tangy flavor. The flesh is firm and meaty and low in acid. Tuey are high in lycopene and in antioxidants like beta-carotene.
