Small peppers with a mild, rich flavor are produced on this compact plant. Shishito is a thin-fleshed Japanese pepper 3-4 inches long and 1 ½ inches in diameter. This bright green to bright red, wrinkled pepper is milder than a jalapeno most of the time but depending on growing conditions it may surprise with a little more heat.
Hot and dry growing conditions may cause some of the peppers to be spicier and more pungent. It makes a great appetizer or side dish sautéed quickly in a little olive oil, also excellent for tempura, chili or stir fry.
